Meet the Author, Talk and Book Signing

Salem Witch Museum
19½ Washington Square North

6:00 – 7:00 pm

The Salem Witch Museum invites you to meet author and historian Marilynne K. Roach as she talks about her latest book Six Women of Salem: The Untold Story of the Accused and their Accusers in the Salem Witch Trials,   In her latest work, Ms. Roach chronicles the lives of six specific women involved in the witch hunt who represent the accusers, the accused, or both, and uses their unique stories to illuminate the larger crisis of the trials. Roach works to reconstruct the events of the trials, bringing to life this representative group of women, and examines the entire experience of the Salem Witch Trials through the eyes of those who lived through the hysteria and delivers an historically intimate narrative that gives readers a front row seat to this desperate and dangerous time in history.

Marilynne K. Roach works as both a historian and illustrator. Her illustrations, how-to articles, and travel pieces have been featured in the Boston Globe. She’s lectured to groups ranging in age from kindergarteners to senior citizens, and is the author of the classic The Salem Witch Trials: A Day-by-Day Chronicle of a Community Under Siege.  Registration is free but space is limited so please register early by emailing: faq@salemwitchmuseum.com or calling 978-744-1692.

Keep Our Dead Alive – Welcome to the Graveyard

Salem Witch Museum

19 ½ Washington Sq. N.

7:30 pm

Apple cider, hot cocoa, seasonal fall treats and graveyards?  You’ll experience all of this at the Salem Witch Museum this fall, when we invite Brenda Sullivan of the Gravestone Girls to take you on a virtual tour, called “Welcome to the Graveyard”.  Their mission is to “Keep Our Dead Alive”. The 90 minute presentation, centered on Salem and Danvers’ combined 33 local cemeteries and is built on photographs recently taken in these interesting burying spaces around Salem (founded 1630) and Danvers (founded 1752), charting the evolution of cemeteries and gravestones from the colonial era into the 21st century.  We will see the local, unique history as told by these silent objects.

This is a popular program that has been given around the New England area by the Gravestone Girls for more than ten years.  The group regularly works with libraries, historical societies, and genealogical groups, among others, to teach about “the art, symbolism, and history of these living history museums located on everyone’s main streets and backyards.  Almost everyone is interested in these peaceful and beautiful spaces, but may be hesitant to say so to others.  The Gravestone Girls let you know you’re not the only one.  Come see what they do.  They fill the room every time.  Space is limited and reservations must be made in advance by visiting www.SalemWitchMuseum.com/GraveyardGirls Admission $30.00 pp available online only.

The Salem Witches Magic Circle

Salem Common

5:00 - 7:00 pm

Join Christian Day, Lorelei, and Leanne Marrama with the Dragon Ritual Drummers as Witches from around the globe gather for the most sacred and magical ritual of Halloween! This event is free and open to all who wish to attend with an open heart and a love for the spirits.

On that most mysterious night when the veil between the worlds is at its thinnest, the Salem Witches gather on Salem Common—as was done on hilltops of old, for a ceremony to honor our loved ones who have crossed over into the spirit world. This time was known to the ancient Celts as Samhain, or Summer’s end for, as nature began to die, so too it was believed, that the spirits of the dead roam the lands seeking old friends among the living. This is a time to renew connections, mourn those you miss, and to celebrate all that these cherished souls brought to your life. Death is not the end, but merely a doorway to another world.

At ritual’s end, join a candlelight procession to HEX at 246 Essex Street, for a concert by the Dragon Ritual Drummers!
